Summer 2011 and 2012 are a huge time for the comic book industry. Look at 2010. Movies like Iron Man 2, Kick-ass and The Green Hornet racked in the money at the box office. Most people don’t know that I work part-time at a movie theater, and I’ve seen the hordes of comic and non-comic fans flocking to the theater. This summer is going to be particularly huge. Traditionally comic books have been a great medium to convert to the big screens. This summer is no different.
Look at all the movies coming out this summer starting with Chris Hemsworth in Thor. Captain America, Transformers 3, Green Lantern and more obscure movies such as Cowboys and Aliens are taking over the box office this summer, and I’m too geeked! And I’m here to hype them up. Here is a round-up of the comic book movies coming out this summer with their trailers. For my non-comic book friends, you might find out about a new comic you’ve never known before. I encourage you to check it out. Free comic book day is tomorrow. Go out and pick them up! Enjoy.
Thor (comes out today, May 6 2011)
Priest (May 13, 2011)
X-men: First Class (June 3, 2011)
Green Lantern (June 17)
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (July 1)
Captain America: The First Avengers (July 22)
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (August 5)
Conan the Barbarian (August 19)
It’s an exciting time for comic book fans this Saturday, May 7, 2011. Free comic book day celebrates its 10th year at an independent comic shop near you. There’s no better time to visit, because not only do you receive free comics from your favorite comic shop, you’ll have a recent to come out celebrate your love for this great medium.
(FCBD F.A.Q. from freecomicbookday.com )
1. What is “Free Comic Book Day?”
As the name implies, Free Comic Book Day is a single day when participating comic book specialty shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops.
2. When is Free Comic Book Day?
Free Comic Book Day is held the first Saturday in May each year.
3. Are they really free?
Yep!
Different shops have policies on how many free comics you can receive, but you will receive at least one free comic if you enter a participating shop location. Check with your retailer for their policies and plans for FCBD.
4. Is every comic book store in the world doing this?
If you’re asking about convenience stores with a spinner rack of comics in a corner somewhere – the answer is no. This event celebrates the independent comic book specialty shops, thousands of which exist in North America alone. Each one is unique in its community, with a style and personality all its own, and each one carries a full line of comics, graphic novels, toys and related products.
While we hope every one of these shops will take part, each shop determines on its own whether or not to participate. You can check our shop locator for a comic shop near you.
5. Then how do I know where to go to get my free comics?
As the first Saturday in May approaches, www.FreeComicBookDay.com will launch a shop locator service that will show you participating retailers in your area. Sign up for our e-mail newsletter to be alerted when the database is ready, or check back in early April.
6. Is this the first Free Comic Book Day?
No! The first Free Comic Book Day event was held in 2002. In the past, thousands of shops around the world have given away millions of free comic books to interested readers. We’re proud of the continuing success of FCBD and look forward to growing the event each year!
7. Can I link to your site?
Of course! Click here to download graphics and other icons.
8. Who’s involved in FCBD?
Free Comic Book Day is administered by a panel representing all parts of the comic book industry: retailers, publishers, suppliers, and Diamond Comic Distributors. Each year, publishers apply to provide comic books at cost to retailers, who in turn give them away for free. Diamond handles marketing and logistics for the event, shipping comics to shops and handling marketing and PR for the event.
9. What’s the big deal about comic books anyway?
Comic books are an original American art form, created in the early days of the twentieth century. They are fun to read, featuring a wide range of diverse story lines that capture the imagination of the readers. That’s worth celebrating in our book – we’re proud to be a part of this wonderful medium. To learn more about comic books and their history, go here.
10. Is this just happening in the U.S.?
Of course not! Shops in Canada and internationally celebrate Free Comic Book Day, too! Any comic book shop in the world can participate in Free Comic Book Day, although there may be some limitations on which titles are available in which countries due to licensing and other considerations. If you want your local shop to get involved, let them know!
11. How many comics do I get?
That will depend on a lot of factors: How many comics does the shop have to give away? How many people visit that day? How many people got there before you? What are the shop’s FCBD policies? The answer to this question will depend on which shop you go to and when. We encourage you to view the shop profiles on our FCDB Shop Locator service for more detailed information, or call you local retailer directly and ask them their policies for FCBD.
12. Can you send me a comic?
No. This website is for informational purposes only – we do not have comics to give away. Free Comic Book Day is celebrated in comic book shops and as a way to get customers to visit shops in their local community. To find a participating comic book shop, see the FCBD Shop Locator.
13. Which comics are available?
Each year, the comics offered change. Click herefor a list of this year’s Gold and Silver comics.
14. Can I grab any comic I want?
Shops will be giving away special comics for the event – you cannot simply take any comic book from the rack. Click on The Comics to see the many choices of comics being given away for free this year.
15. How can I find out more?
To get updates about Free Comic Book Day, sign up for our e-mail updates. It’s infrequent, so you won’t be deluged with spam, but it’ll have plenty of cool info for you! Plus, check this website as the first Saturday in May grows near for new information.
16. What can I do to spread the word?
Tell your friends, your family, your classmates- anyone you think might enjoy comics for the first time- or should start reading them again
What is the manga industry coming to here in America?! I would bitch and moan again about how people in the U.S. just don’t buy manga anymore because of piracy, and sheer laziness. No offense against Naruto and Bleach fans, but there’s more out there than that.
Just last year the Japanese manga industry used their digital rights laws to their advantage. Scanalation sites like onemanga.com along with various other sites were shut down. However, people can still get some of their manga through torrents. That’s not even the primary issue anymore. So I lied. Just going to say it–– Anime fans, this is your fault. I’m sure Tokyopop couldn’t bounce back fast enough or get enough fans interested in actually buying manga. You say you want better anime/manga here in the U.S., well start demanding that they license more material. Why bring a new series to America if people aren’t going to buy it? It’s sad. Really sad.

Manga Pioneer Tokyopop Shuts Down U.S. Publishing
By Heidi MacDonald
Apr 15, 2011
In a statement on the Tokyopop website, Levy wrote of the company’s beginning with such titles as Parastye and Sailor Moon and summed up, “Fourteen years later, I’m laying down my guns. Together, our community has fought the good fight, and, as a result, the Manga Revolution has been won–manga has become a ubiquitous part of global pop culture. I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished – and the incredible group of passionate fans we’ve served along the way (my fellow revolutionaries!).”
Square Enix and feelplus released a new third-person shooter called MindJack, which takes place in the year 2031. The government has fallen and secret agents tried to make things right by hacking into vehicles, machinery and even people in order to maintain order. The game wasn’t well-received during it’s January release. IGN gave it two stars. But if you like shooters and like the ability to control people’s minds, (well not really)…then check it out. Never mind the game; one of my closest friends is featured in the American commercial. Absolutely hilarious! Check it out.Shout out to Brian Johnson. <3
Hint: The part with the haircut..that wasn’t acting.
Sucker Punch opens today. I’ve been looking forward to this movie for more than a year now. But the mixed reviews pouring in are a little disheartening. Viewers are claiming it’s too flashy, the plot makes no sense…it’s just eye candy. Some of the best anime doesn’t make sense, which this movie derives some of its influences from. Cool fighting scenes from martial art classics doesn’t scream Oscar for the best acting; but anyway I digress. I’m looking forward to being blown away visually. Screw if it doesn’t make sense completely. I’m sure this movie is going to be a cult classic. (Biased).
